How does IV hydration therapy aid addiction recovery?

IV hydration therapy helps your body recover from the physical damage of substance use. Addiction and withdrawal severely dehydrate your body and drain it of nutrients. IV therapy replenishes what your body needs most while healing by delivering fluids, electrolytes, and nutrients into your bloodstream.

Substance use disorder (SUD) disrupts your body’s natural balance in several ways. Alcohol acts as a diuretic, causing increased fluid loss. Stimulants can cause excessive sweating and decrease fluid intake. And opioids often cause severe dehydration. During withdrawal, the effects of substance abuse are compounded by vomiting, sweating, and diarrhea, which further deplete your body’s resources.

IV hydration therapy helps your recovery by:

  • Managing severe withdrawal dehydration from excessive sweating, vomiting, and diarrhea that rapidly deplete your body.
  • Supporting compromised liver and kidney function typically strained by long-term substance use.
  • Addressing substance-specific nutrient deficiencies such as B vitamins from alcohol use or electrolytes from stimulant use.
  • Stabilizing vital signs during the first 72 hours of detox when blood pressure, heart rate, and body temperature fluctuate most.
  • Supporting medication-assisted treatment by maintaining the hydration levels needed for detox medications to work.

At Ardu, we integrate IV hydration therapy into our comprehensive treatment approach.

Ardu’s professional IV hydration services

At Ardu Recovery Center, we’ve developed a sophisticated approach to intravenous vitamin therapy that addresses the unique challenges of addiction recovery. Our medical team integrates this treatment strategically throughout your recovery journey, carefully timing sessions to provide maximum therapeutic benefits.

Before beginning treatment, our physicians conduct a thorough evaluation that includes blood chemistry analysis, withdrawal assessment, and review of your substance use history. This detailed process helps us identify:

  • Specific electrolyte imbalances.
  • Current nutritional deficiencies.
  • Kidney and liver function status.
  • Potential medication interactions.
  • Individual risk factors.

Our team uses this information to develop a customized treatment plan tailored to your needs. Each IV formulation is balanced based on the type of substance dependency, stage of recovery, and your body’s specific requirements.

Throughout your treatment, our advanced monitoring system tracks your progress in real time. Regular blood work helps maintain optimal electrolyte balance, while our medical staff continuously assesses your treatment response. We time each session strategically to support the phases of detoxification and address acute withdrawal symptoms.

Board-certified physicians oversee all treatments, while licensed nursing staff administers therapy and maintains detailed documentation. This high level of medical supervision means you receive the maximum benefit from IV hydration therapy while staying safe.

We integrate IV fluid therapy with your other treatments, coordinating timing and adjusting protocols as needed. This comprehensive approach supports your body’s healing process throughout detox and early recovery as you build a stronger foundation for lasting sobriety.

What does IV hydration therapy do?

Unlike oral supplements or other hydration methods, IV therapy bypasses the digestive system and allows the immediate and complete absorption of fluids, vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients.

Direct delivery makes IV therapy effective for dehydration, vitamin deficiencies, and other health concerns. Here’s how this treatment works:

  • Essential nutrients and electrolytes flow straight to your blood vessels and cells, where they begin supporting cellular function and repair. This rapid delivery system helps restore balance throughout your body’s systems more efficiently than oral supplements.
  • The therapy replenishes amino acids and other compounds your body needs. These building blocks support everything from muscle recovery to brain function.
  • Through special blends of essential vitamins and minerals, IV treatment provides therapeutic doses tailored to address specific deficiencies. Your body receives exactly what it needs in the right amounts.
  • The treatment helps regulate blood pressure, improve circulation, and restore healthy energy levels. By delivering hydration and nutrients directly to your cells, it supports your body’s natural healing and regulatory processes.
  • Targeted nutrient delivery strengthens your immune response, providing your body with the resources to maintain health and fight illness.
  • When oral intake might be compromised or insufficient, IV therapy makes sure your body receives and uses 100% of the administered nutrients.

Our medical team creates a custom IV formula for each person based on the substance(s) they’re detoxing from and how their body is responding to withdrawal.

Can a doctor prescribe IV fluids at home?

It is possible to get intravenous fluids at home, but if you’re recovering from addiction, you require professional treatment in a medical setting. The risks of home IV therapy are too high when you’re going through withdrawal and detox. You need expert care and constant monitoring to stay safe.

Mobile IV services usually handle mild dehydration, hangover recovery, or general wellness. Home IV therapy requires careful medical screening, proper storage of fluids, sterile equipment, and trained professionals to administer treatment. Even with a prescription, insurance rarely covers at-home IV services, and the costs can be significant.

Undergoing IV therapy at our center means you get the highest safety standards and immediate medical support. Our IV therapy comes in a controlled environment where our medical team can watch your progress and adjust your treatment right away if needed. Plus, your hydration treatment works hand-in-hand with your other recovery services. We provide everything you need in one place, with a team that understands what you’re going through.

Would you rather get treatment at home and risk complications or receive professional care in a safe, supportive environment designed for recovery?

Hydration therapy services FAQ

Can IV replace drinking water?

IV hydration therapy doesn’t replace regular water consumption. While IV therapy provides immediate hydration in specific medical situations, your body needs regular oral fluid intake for proper daily function. Drinking water helps maintain natural bodily processes, supports digestion, and promotes optimal health in ways that periodic IV treatments cannot replicate.

What not to do after IV drip?

After IV therapy, avoid strenuous exercise for several hours to let your body adjust. Don’t consume alcohol or excessive caffeine because these can counteract the hydration benefits. Keep the injection site clean and dry, and watch for unusual reactions. You can resume normal activities, but take it easy and listen to your body’s signals.

How safe is IV therapy?

When administered by medical professionals in a controlled environment, IV therapy is safe. Potential risks include infection, air embolism, or allergic reactions. That’s why proper medical screening, sterile conditions, and professional oversight are required. Complications are rare when treatment is provided by qualified providers.

Can you drink IV hydration every day?

You don’t “drink” IV hydration; it is administered intravenously. Daily IV hydration isn’t recommended or necessary for most people. While it’s safe for specific medical conditions under professional supervision, regular IV therapy should align with actual medical needs. Your body is designed to maintain proper hydration through oral intake, and frequent IV use may interfere with your body’s natural regulatory systems.

What are the downsides of IV hydration?

The downsides of IV services include cost (insurance doesn’t typically cover wellness IV therapy), risk of infection at the injection site, and possible fluid overload if not properly monitored. Some people experience temporary discomfort or bruising.

How long do IV therapy results last?

Results typically last 2–4 days, depending on your activity level, lifestyle, and reason for treatment. Improved energy levels, better hydration, and other effects are usually noticeable immediately and can persist for several days. Without maintaining proper oral hydration and healthy habits, benefits will diminish.

Do IV drips hurt?

Most people experience minimal discomfort during IV therapy. You’ll feel a quick pinch during needle insertion, but once the IV is placed, the procedure is generally painless. The infusion process itself shouldn’t cause pain.

How do you tell if you need an IV for dehydration?

Signs you might need IV hydration include severe thirst, dark urine, dizziness, rapid heartbeat, and decreased urination. If you’re experiencing confusion, extreme fatigue, or can’t keep fluids down, seek medical attention. Not all dehydration requires IV therapy, but severe cases, especially during withdrawal or illness, may require professional intervention.
