What treatments can float therapy complement?

While float therapy is a powerful tool on its own if you want to de-stress or relieve pain, it can also enhance the effectiveness of mental or physical health treatments. Our experts at Ardu integrate float therapy with other evidence-based modalities to create a synergistic effect that amplifies the benefits of each intervention.

Treatments and therapies that can be used alongside float therapy include:

  1. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps individuals with addiction and mental health issues change negative thoughts and behaviors into healthier coping mechanisms. Floating can help you gain a clearer, more focused mindset, making it easier to engage in the cognitive restructuring process of CBT.
  2. Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) teaches mindfulness, distress tolerance, and emotion regulation skills to help people cope with stress and manage intense emotions. The deep relaxation achieved through floating can enhance your ability to practice these skills taught in DBT.
  3. Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) uses eye movements and bilateral stimulation to help process traumatic memories and reduce their emotional impact. Floating can help you reach a state of calm and safety, preparing you for the processing of traumatic memories during EMDR sessions.
  4. The sensory deprivation experienced in the float pod can deepen your meditation practice, allowing for greater introspection and self-awareness.
  5. Nutritional counseling is crucial in recovery. It helps individuals develop a balanced, healthy relationship with food, supports physical and mental well-being, reduces cravings, and promotes overall healing. Floating can help reduce stress and promote a more balanced state of mind, making it easier to adopt and maintain healthy eating habits.
  6. The enhanced creativity and emotional clarity experienced after floating can enrich your engagement in experiential therapies like art and music.
  7. The improved self-awareness and spiritual connection fostered by floating can support your participation in 12-step programs such as Alcoholics Anonymous and other support groups.
  8. Detoxification can be a physically and emotionally challenging process, often accompanied by symptoms such as anxiety, insomnia, muscle tension, and cravings. Float therapy can help alleviate these symptoms and support the process. Our detox center offers a safe, comfortable environment where you can begin your recovery journey, with float spa therapy as an integral part.

No matter which path to recovery you choose, our Utah float therapy is there to support you every step of the way.

What is float spa therapy?

Float spa therapy, floatation therapy, or sensory deprivation therapy, involves floating in a shallow pool of skin-temperature, mineral-rich water inside an enclosed pod or chamber.

Our Serenity Float Spa pod contains approximately a thousand pounds of Epsom salt and about a foot of body-temperature water. The salt allows you to float effortlessly. It also has LED lights and soothing music to help even the most claustrophobic of patients ease into a calm state of mind. Once the patient is ready for a deep meditative state, the music and lights dim.

Those who’ve had float tank sessions describe the float experience as meditative, providing deep relaxation for both the mind and body. Floating creates a calm, distraction-free environment that allows you to gently let go of tension and focus inward.

The unique sensory deprivation and near-weightless floating of a float therapy session allow the central nervous system to enter a deeply relaxed yet conscious and healing state. As such, float therapy is growing in popularity and acceptance as an alternative and supplementary treatment for many mental and physical health conditions.

What are the benefits of a float spa?

Swedish researchers have found that float therapy provides an array of scientifically validated benefits, especially for those dealing with a chronic condition. In healthy participants, float spa therapy increases optimism and improves sleep quality.

Floating induces relaxation by shutting down the amygdala, the brain region that controls fear, anxiety, and stress responses. By quieting the amygdala, floating helps shift your brain from a state of heightened alertness to one of tranquility and inner focus. As a result, your body experiences a profound sense of calm. This supports emotional regulation, clarity of thought, and overall well-being.

The researchers found that float tank treatment can:

  • Induce deep relaxation and calmness
  • Significantly reduce stress levels
  • Lower symptoms of anxiety and depression
  • Chronic pain relief
  • Improve the quality of sleep
  • Increase energy and mood
  • Increase endorphins
  • Lower blood pressure and cortisol levels
  • Reduce withdrawal discomfort for those with addictions
  • Heighten mind-body awareness and mindfulness

According to the Swedish study results, a series of twelve floatation therapy sessions over seven weeks can induce widespread psychological and physiological benefits as a preventative healthcare intervention.

Float spa therapy FAQ

What does a float spa do for your body?

Floating in a sensory deprivation tank filled with warm, salt-saturated water can provide a wide range of physical benefits.

  1. The high salt concentration allows you to effortlessly float, relieving pressure on joints and muscles, which can help reduce muscle pain and tension headaches.
  2. The experience triggers a deep relaxation response and lowers stress levels. This can lead to the production of theta waves in the brain, promoting a sense of calm and well-being and improving sleep quality.
  3. Floating may also enhance blood circulation, immune function, and magnesium absorption through the skin.
  4. The Epsom salt solution in the float tank, combined with the skin’s natural absorption of magnesium, can help reduce inflammation in the body. This makes float spas an excellent therapy for athletes and those with chronic inflammatory conditions.

Do you wear clothes in a float spa?

You don’t wear clothes in a float spa. To fully experience the sensory deprivation and to keep the salt water clean, you float nude. Private suites are provided for showering before and after your float, and you enter the float tank completely naked. The room is locked, and you have complete privacy throughout the session.

Why am I so tired after a float?

If you feel tired after a float session, it may be due to the deep relaxation state achieved during the experience. The float tank environment minimizes sensory input, allowing your body and mind to enter a state of profound rest, similar to the feeling of waking up from a nap or deep sleep. This can leave you feeling groggy or tired immediately after the session, but most people report improved energy levels and better sleep later on.

Can you sleep in a float spa?

It’s possible to fall asleep in a float spa due to the deep relaxation induced by the sensory deprivation experience. The warm, body-temperature water and lack of external stimuli create an ideal environment for drifting off to sleep. Falling asleep is not the primary goal of floating, and many people remain in a state of relaxed awareness during their session.

What are the disadvantages of float therapy?

While float therapy is generally safe, there are some potential disadvantages to consider.

Potential negative effects of floatation include:

  1. Claustrophobia: some people may experience anxiety or discomfort due to the enclosed nature of the float tank, even though most tanks are spacious and well-ventilated.
  2. Ear irritation: the high concentration of Epsom salts in the water can cause ear irritation or discomfort.
  3. Skin sensitivity: some people may experience skin irritation or dryness due to the high salt content of the water.
  4. Dizziness or disorientation: after leaving the sensory deprivation environment, some people may feel dizzy or disoriented as they readjust to normal sensory stimulation.
  5. Hygiene concerns: although reputable float centers—such as Ardu—maintain strict cleaning protocols, some may be concerned about the cleanliness and sanitation of the float tanks.
  6. Contraindications: floating may not be suitable for everyone, particularly those with certain medical conditions such as open wounds, epilepsy, or severe mental health disorders.

Should I shower after a float?

You should always shower after a float session to remove the salt water from your skin and hair. Most float centers provide private shower facilities with body wash, shampoo, and conditioner for post-float cleansing. Showering also helps you transition back to the everyday world after the deep relaxation of your float experience.

How often should I float?

The optimal frequency of floating varies from person to person. Some people experience benefits from a single session, while others prefer to float regularly. Many people find that floating once a week or every two weeks helps them maintain positive effects on stress levels, pain relief, and overall well-being. Consult with your float spa provider to determine a schedule that works best for your needs and budget.

Can you lose weight from float therapy?

Floating itself does not directly lead to weight loss, as it is a passive activity that does not burn a significant amount of calories. Float therapy can indirectly support weight loss efforts by reducing stress, improving sleep quality, and promoting relaxation. Stress and poor sleep are often linked to overeating and weight gain, so by addressing these issues, floating may help individuals make healthier lifestyle choices that support weight management.

Does float therapy detox your body?

Float therapy can support the body’s natural detoxification processes, but it is not a detox treatment in the traditional sense. The deep relaxation achieved during a float session can help reduce levels of stress hormones like cortisol, which may support the body’s ability to eliminate toxins. The magnesium in the salt water can be absorbed through the skin, potentially aiding in detoxification and promoting overall wellness.
